The Pattern Speed of the Galactic Bar
نویسنده
چکیده
Most late-type stars in the solar neighborhood have velocities similar to the local standard of rest (LSR), but there is a clearly separated secondary component corresponding to a slower rotation and a mean outward motion. Detailed simulations of the response of a stellar disk to a central bar show that such a bi-modality is expected from outer-Lindblad resonant scattering. When constraining the run of the rotation curve by the proper motion of SgrA and the terminal gas velocities, the value observed for the rotation velocity separating the two components results in a value of (53± 3) km s kpc for the pattern speed of the bar, only weakly dependent on the precise values for R0 and bar angle φ. The Galactic Bar
The Milky Way has a barred bulge. This article summarizes the current understanding of the main structural parameters and pattern speed of the bar, and compares predicted values for the microlensing optical depth with the bulge microlensing observations.
متن کاملNew Constraints on the Galactic Bar
Previous work has related the Galactic Bar to structure in the local stellar velocity distribution. Here we show that the Bar also influences the spatial gradients of the velocity vector via the Oort constants. By numerical integration of test-particles we simulate measurements of the Oort C value in a gravitational potential including the Galactic Bar. We account for the observed trend that C ...
متن کاملModel-based pattern speed estimates for 38 barred galaxies
We have modelled 38 barred galaxies by using near-IR and optical data from the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey. We constructed the gravitational potentials of the galaxies from H-band photometry, assuming constant mass-to-light ratio. The halo component we chose corresponds to the so called universal rotation curve. In each case, we used the response of gaseous and stellar par...
متن کاملOrbital dynamics of three-dimensional bars: II. Investigation of the parameter space
We investigate the orbital structure in a class of 3D models of barred galaxies. We consider different values of the pattern speed, of the strength of the bar and of the parameters of the central bulge of the galactic model. The morphology of the stable orbits in the bar region is associated with the degree of folding of the x1-characteristic. This folding is larger for lower values of the patt...
متن کاملBaltic Astronomy, vol. 25, 347–355, 2016 DETERMINING THE GALACTIC BAR PARAMETERS BASED ON THE HERCULES AND WOLF 630 STELLAR STREAMS
We identified the four most significant features in the UV velocity distribution of solar neighborhood stars: H1, H2 and W1, W2 in the Hercules and Wolf 630 streams, respectively. We set the task of determining a number of characteristics of the central Galactic bar independently by analyzing each of the identified features under the assumption that the Hercules and Wolf 630 streams have a bar-...
